Tranquility in a noisy city - Jing'an Temple

At 7:00 a.m., the morning sunlight just fell on Shanghai, like rustling gold powder, bringing vitality to the city. In the Jing'an district, with the sound of the bell, a quaint temple opens its doors to welcome the pious incense-bearers. This is Jing'an Temple, an ancient temple that has been in existence for nearly a thousand years and has witnessed the changes in Shanghai. Shanghai Jing'an Temple, located at 1686 Nanjing West Road, Jing'an District, is said to have been originally built in 247 A.D. as the Shongyuan Temple of Shanghai Read, created by the Kang Sangha. In 1216 A.D., because the original site is located in the riverside, fearing the risk of collapse, so moved to the current site, that is, at that time Lupu boiling well beach, and in the following years gradually expanded, to have the present scale. Today, Jing'an Temple has a number of buildings of interest, including the Gate, Bell Tower, Drum Tower, Muni Hall, Guanyin Hall, and Mahamudra Hall, covering an area of 22,000 square meters.

Jing'an Temple looks even more golden under the sunlight

In Jing'an Temple, teak wood is everywhere. The temple's mountain gate is divided into two levels. The main body is built of teak wood, with granite pieces on the outside. The three gates on the first floor are all made of teak wood, with lotus flower and Buddha's hand carved inside the doorway, complementing the stable and solid wooden doors, showing the Buddha's heart in its quiet beauty. On the second floor, the outer corridor is decorated with white jade handrails and teak wood inside, matching wood and jade, warm and natural.

Passing through the bell and drum towers, you come to the Mahamudra Hall, where the teak interior is even more enchanting. The temple is built with 46 columns of teak wood with a diameter of about 80 cm, leading to a 26-meter high copper tile roof. The walls are covered with large panels of teak on all sides, and the doors, window panes and eaves are also made of teak, with over 3,000 cubic meters of teak used. Looking around the Mahamuni Temple, a statue of Buddha in pure silver is enshrined inside the temple; outside the temple, a white jade carved corridor directly connects the entire temple; in the square in front of the door stands a white bronze Blessing and Wisdom Tripod; the left and right rooms are also set up with the statue of Avalokiteshvara and the Burmese white jade statue of Sakyamuni. A variety of precious materials are set off by Burmese teak, precious but not conflicting. The golden, subdued color of teak wood is luxurious and accommodating, allowing the multiple materials to highlight their own characteristics while blending into one and shining.

Jing'an Temple used teak as the main material for decoration

To the north of the Daxiongbao Hall, Jing'an Temple Dharma Hall also inherits the teak structure of the main hall. The hall is divided into seven floors, with a total height of about 32 meters. The teak roof ridges, eaves and arches are carved with representative images of Buddhism, such as elephants, lotus flowers and Dharma wheels, with intricate and exquisite patterns that shine with a golden glow and are solemn and sacred.
